Neodesha is a city in Wilson County, Kansas, with a 2020 census population of 2,275. The name derives from the Osage word Ni-o-sho-de, meaning "The-Water-Is-Smoky-With-Mud," and the city itself translates as "meeting of the waters." The area's first settlers established a trading post in October 1867 to the northwest of present-day Neodesha, with permission from the Osage Nation, who valued the outpost as the nearest alternative to trading posts more than thirty miles away. After the Osage signed the Drum Creek Treaty in September 1870 and relocated to Indian Territory, settlers were able to move into the region more freely. Neodesha was officially incorporated on March 2, 1871, with its original plat filed at the U.S. Land Office in July of that year.
The city became significant in American oil history when the first commercially successful oil well in what would become the Mid-Continent Oil Field was drilled in Neodesha in 1892. Known as the Norman No. 1 Oil Well and located in the southeast part of the city, it marked an important milestone in petroleum development. The Norman No. 1 Museum now stands near the original wellsite. The railroad arrived in 1879, further connecting the young city to broader commerce networks.
During World War II, Neodesha played a role on the home front when the government established a branch prisoner-of-war camp there in 1943 to house German and Italian prisoners, helping address labor shortages caused by American military service.
