Moline is a small city located in south central Elk County, Kansas, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and K-99. With a population of 345 as of the 2020 census, Moline sits on a slightly elevated plateau in the valley of Wildcat Creek, a stream named by Native Americans for the prominent bobcats that once inhabited the area.
The city was founded during a period of rapid expansion along the Santa Fe Railway's westward route. The Land and Town Company chartered the land on July 21, 1879, and laid out the town. The name Moline was chosen at the suggestion of J.F. Chapman of the original town company, who came from Moline, Illinois, and because local farmers widely used Moline plows. The first post office was established in September of that same year.
Moline is perhaps best known for being home to Kansas' oldest swinging bridge, a suspension-type structure built in 1904 that spans Wildcat Creek. Immediately to the west of this historic bridge sits a limestone waterfall on an intermittent stream, adding to the area's natural features.
