Mishicot is a village in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, with a population of 1,432 according to the 2020 census. The area has deep roots in Native American history, originally occupied by the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk peoples. Following the 1831 Treaty of Washington, settlers were able to purchase land in the region. The village itself takes its name from Chief Mishicott of the Potawatomi nation, though the original spelling with two T's was officially shortened to one around 1950 when the village incorporated with the State of Wisconsin. A notable Potawatomi leader named Simon Kahquados lived in Mishicot and made multiple trips to Washington, D.C., advocating for compensation of lands lost by his people. His efforts led to a congressional action in 1906 establishing a census of Potawatomi formerly in Wisconsin and Michigan, though only meager monthly payments resulted. Early settlers came primarily from Germany, Bohemia, Switzerland, and Canada. By the early twentieth century, Mishicot had developed into a thriving community with six hotels, three general stores, a movie theater, a grist mill, a brewery, and three churches. The village's first public school was organized and its first school building constructed in 1849. Today, Mishicot remains a small but stable community, connected to nearby areas via Wisconsin Highway 147.
