Millbrae is a city in northern San Mateo County, California, situated near San Francisco International Airport and bordered by San Andreas Lake to the southwest. The land where Millbrae now stands holds a deep history rooted in indigenous presence. The Ramaytush Ohlone people lived in the Bay Area for thousands of years, with anthropological evidence suggesting their ethnogenesis occurred around 700 CE following migration from the Central Valley. Prior to colonization, multiple local tribes inhabited villages along San Bruno Creek and the surrounding area, including communities known as Urebure and Siplichiquin. When Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed the Pacific coast in 1542, the Ohlone people were already well established in the region. Over the following centuries, subsequent Spanish expeditions mapped the coastline and eventually established missions throughout Alta California. Mission San Francisco de Asís, established in 1776 about ten miles north of present-day Millbrae, profoundly changed the local indigenous population. Between 1777 and 1783, nearly all Ohlone people in the area were baptized, and by 1793, the eight village sites in the San Francisco and northern San Mateo County region had been abandoned as the indigenous population relocated to the mission.
