Mico is an unincorporated community in northeastern Medina County, Texas, located approximately 40 miles west of Downtown San Antonio and part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community's origins trace to the early 1900s when the Medina Irrigation Company, founded by engineer and developer Dr. Frederick Stark Pearson, established a workers camp to house approximately 1500 Mexican laborers and their families who built Medina Dam. Completed in 1913, the dam became the fourth largest in the United States and earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The dam created Lake Medina, a reservoir designed to irrigate an estimated 60,000 acres of farmland. Pearson raised private funding chiefly through subscriptions sold to British investors, but the outbreak of World War I halted capital flow for farmland sales. His company entered receivership in 1914 and was eventually sold at public auction in 1924. The dam and lake are now operated by a local water authority. The settlement was originally named MICO after the company's acronym, renamed Medina Lake in 1916, then reverted to Mico in 1923. Today, the community operates with a Volunteer City Council Manager and Volunteer Fire Department, offering visitors local bars for entertainment.
