Mesa is an unincorporated community in Adams County, Idaho, situated near U.S. Route 95 approximately seven miles south of Council. The community maintains its own ZIP code, 83643, and is home to the Marymount Hermitage. In 1960, Mesa had a population of 30 residents.
The early twentieth century brought significant development to Mesa through the Mesa Orchards Company, which became known for apple production in the region. To address the naturally dry conditions, the company constructed an ambitious seven-mile-long wooden flume to transport water from the Middle Fork of the Weiser River, completing the irrigation system by 1911. As the orchard operation expanded, a tramway was built in 1920 to convey fruit over three miles north to the railroad, facilitating the transport of produce to market. However, the company faced financial difficulties and changed ownership in 1936 due to debt.
The orchards' future changed dramatically during the winter of 1949, when Mesa experienced 63 consecutive days of below-zero temperatures. This severe cold devastated many fruit trees, which produced poorly afterward and were eventually cleared for pasture. Today, Mesa's landscape reflects this agricultural transition, with the area now home to private residences alongside range and pasture lands, a quieter character than its early twentieth-century days of active fruit production and commercial enterprise.
