Mathis is a city in San Patricio County, Texas, with a population of 4,333 according to the 2020 census. The town's origins trace back to 1887, when Thomas H. Mathis donated 300 acres for a townsite and school as the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad laid tracks through the county. Mathis and his brother J. M. Mathis held extensive ranching interests in the area, encompassing thousands of acres. Thomas Mathis famously enclosed the town with a fence, and as late as 1906, arriving and departing trains had to be let in and out through its gates. The Mathis post office opened in 1890, and the town's first school was established in a private residence in 1893. A second railroad, the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Pacific, arrived in 1913. The local economy developed around cotton, corn, and ranching, with winter vegetables becoming important in the 1930s. Mathis incorporated in 1939. The formation of Lake Mathis in the 1930s, later renamed Lake Corpus Christi, added recreational value to the region. Construction of the Wesley Seale Dam in the late 1950s raised the lake level, spurring development of weekend homes. Today, Lake Corpus Christi offers year-round recreation including swimming, boating, and fishing, drawing winter residents and visitors to its shores and the surrounding state park.
