A Little About Manakin Sabot

The Story of Manakin Sabot, VA

Manakin Sabot, an affluent unincorporated community in Goochland County, Virginia, northwest of Richmond in the Piedmont region, has deep roots in both Native American and European history. Before European colonists arrived, the Monacan people, Siouan-speaking inhabitants of the uplands, had established a village called Mowhemcho above the falls of the James River. This easternmost village of their confederacy, documented on Captain John Smith's 1612 map of Virginia, had been abandoned for decades by 1699, possibly since Bacon's Rebellion.

In 1699, King William III granted ten thousand acres of Virginia land to Marquis Olivier de la Muce, a French aristocrat and Huguenot who had escaped persecution and imprisonment in France. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, religious persecution intensified, prompting hundreds of Protestant refugees to emigrate. Four ships departed Southampton in summer 1699 with over seven hundred people, including four Huguenot ministers and two surgeons. Rather than settling in the established Tidewater region, officials placed them twenty miles above the James River falls in the sparsely populated Piedmont, following William Byrd II's suggestion. Two villages emerged in Goochland: Manakin and Sabot.

The French settlers, many educated and wealthy ex-aristocrats and noblemen, received seven years of tax exemption and built churches, schools, hospitals, and smithies. Though urban refugees initially struggled with frontier conditions, they gradually adapted and dispersed to their farms. By 1750, the village had become defunct. Over generations, French settlers intermarried with English colonists and their descendants migrated westward and southward. Several historically significant plantations and farms from the colonial period remain, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
