Malad City stands as the sole city and county seat of Oneida County, Idaho, with a population of 2,299 as of 2020. Located along Interstate 15 on the east side of the Malad Valley, just thirteen miles from the Utah border, this community traces its origins to 1864, making it one of Idaho's oldest settlements.
The city's distinctive name comes from the Malad River, named by Scottish-Canadian trapper Donald Mackenzie between 1818 and 1821. When some of his men fell ill while camped in the valley, Mackenzie attributed the sickness to the river's water and named it "Malade," French for sick. Later trappers led by Jim Bridger discovered the true culprit: beaver that had fed on poisonous water hemlock roots, which native tribes had learned to safely prepare through boiling.
Malad began as a Welsh LDS settlement whose inhabitants brought their cherished traditions with them. The community takes particular pride in its Welsh heritage, claiming more people of Welsh descent per capita than anywhere outside Wales. An annual eisteddfod celebrating Welsh music and poetry continued until 1916, and the tradition was revived in 2004 with the establishment of the Malad Valley Welsh Festival.
The town's growth accelerated significantly after Brigham Young's 1855 visit, when LDS families migrated to establish Fort Stuart, renamed Malad City in 1857. By 1886, it had become the fastest-growing village in eastern Idaho, serving as an important commercial center. The arrival of railroad service in 1906 further boosted development, doubling the population over the following fifteen years.
