Louisville is Kentucky's most populous city and the 27th-largest city in the United States. Named after King Louis XVI of France, Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark on Corn Island, making it one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachians. The Virginia General Assembly approved the town charter two years later in 1780. The settlement initially grew as a portage site because the Falls of the Ohio River created a barrier to river travel, forcing boats to be unloaded and moved downriver before proceeding. By 1828, the population had reached 7,000 and the city became incorporated.
Louisville developed into a major shipping port during the nineteenth century and served as a point of escape for fugitive slaves heading north to the free state of Indiana. The city experienced significant growth and civic tension in the 1850s, culminating in the violent event known as Bloody Monday on August 6, 1855, when Protestant mobs attacked German and Irish Catholic neighborhoods, resulting in 22 deaths and substantial property damage. During the Civil War, Louisville remained a major Union stronghold that kept Kentucky in the Union, though the city itself was never directly attacked.
Since 2003, Louisville and Jefferson County have shared the same borders following a city-county merger, creating the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government. Today the consolidated area has a population of 782,969 according to the 2020 census, while the broader Louisville metropolitan area spans 12 surrounding counties and has 1.39 million residents.
