Loretto began as a stagecoach station called Glen Rock in the early nineteenth century before taking on new life in 1870 when German Catholic immigrants arrived and established a new city. The name Loretto may have been inspired by the Loreto region in Italy, or possibly by a sainted nun. The immigrants founded the Sacred Heart Church of Jesus, whose brick church building, completed in 1912, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains active today.
The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s transformed Loretto into a thriving lumber town, and its downtown district flourished with diverse businesses including the Bank of Loretto building constructed in the 1920s, general merchandise stores, a milling company established in 1895, a doctor's office, a cobbler's shop, cafes, hotels, and a funeral home. The Loretto Milling Company continues operating, making it one of the oldest family-run businesses in the city. However, the construction of U.S. Route 43 to the east in the 1940s redirected commercial activity away from the historic district, causing its decline. Like many Southern towns, Loretto is currently seeking grants to revive its older historic downtown area.
Located in Lawrence County, Loretto sits on a broad ridgetop between Shoal Creek Valley and Bluewater Creek, covering 3.8 square miles. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 1,739, a modest increase from 1,714 in 2010. The city is home to the Loretto High School Mustangs.
