Loretto is a home rule-class city in Marion County, Kentucky, with a population of 723 according to the 2020 census. The city takes its name from the Sisters of Loretto, a Catholic congregation founded in 1812 at nearby St. Mary. The sisters themselves were named for Loreto in Italy, home to the Basilica della Santa Casa. When the sisters arrived, they established a school to educate frontier children, and by 1833 the growing community warranted its own post office. The city was formally incorporated in 1866.
Today, Loretto is best known as the home of the Maker's Mark bourbon distillery. The distillery's roots trace back to an operation established by Charles Burks in the early nineteenth century, which was greatly expanded by his descendants in the late 1880s. Bill Samuels purchased the distillery in 1953 and renamed the brand Maker's Mark. Located three miles east of Loretto, the distillery has earned recognition as both a National Historic Landmark and a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Its distinctive barrel warehouses are concentrated in the western part of the city.
Loretto sits in northwestern Marion County at the intersection of Kentucky Route 52 and Route 49, positioned roughly ten miles northwest of Lebanon, thirteen miles southwest of Springfield, and fifteen miles south of Bardstown. The city covers 3.2 square miles and remains a small but historically significant community with deep roots in Kentucky's religious and industrial heritage.
