Lockeford is an unincorporated community in San Joaquin County, California, with a population of 3,521 as of the 2020 census. The town was founded in the mid-nineteenth century by brothers Dean Jewett Locke and Elmer Locke, who settled in the area in 1851. Dean Locke established a ranch and later developed the town itself. The community's name, coined by Dean's wife Delia in 1859, references the ford that Dean built across the Mokelumne River. Delia Locke's diaries, which chronicle the early history of Lockeford and her family's role in founding the town, are preserved at the University of the Pacific. Recognized as California Historical Landmark #365, Lockeford occupies 8.4 square miles in a rural setting and is served by California State Route 88, one of four routes crossing the Sierra Nevada in the region.
