Liberal, the county seat of Seward County, Kansas, is located in the southwestern corner of the state along U.S. Route 54, near the Kansas-Oklahoma border. With a population of 18,743 as of 2024, the city has grown from modest beginnings to become a significant regional center. The city owes its name to early settler Seymour S. Rogers, who built the first house in the area in 1872 and became known for his generosity in providing free water to thirsty travelers. Locals reportedly called his kindness "very liberal," and when Rogers established a general store and post office in 1885, he named the post office Liberal. After the railroad arrived and a town plan was created in 1888, the population reached around 800 within a year.
The discovery of natural resources shaped Liberal's twentieth-century development. Natural gas was found west of town in 1920 as part of the massive Panhandle-Hugoton Gas Field, followed by oil discovery to the southwest in 1951. In 1963, the world's largest helium plant, National Helium, opened near the city. Today, Liberal is home to Seward County Community College and sits in the High Plains region, approximately 140 miles north-northeast of Amarillo, Texas.
