Leoti is the county seat of Wichita County, Kansas, and home to 1,475 residents according to the 2020 census. Founded in 1885 by men from Garden City, Kansas, the town has a colorful and dramatic past. Just two years after its establishment, Leoti became the center of what is remembered as the bloodiest county seat fight in American Western history. On February 27, 1887, gunmen from Leoti traveled to the rival neighboring town of Coronado, resulting in several deaths and injuries. A third settlement called Farmer City, positioned between the two feuding towns, had hoped to become the county seat and end the violence, but Leoti ultimately prevailed in claiming that distinction. Today, Coronado and Farmer City consist mainly of farmland. The origin of Leoti's name remains uncertain, with three competing traditions: some believe it is an Indian term for "prairie flower," others say it was named after settler Leoti Kibbee, while a third account credits Leoti Gray, daughter of a town founder. Located in a semi-arid climate region, Leoti spans 1.31 square miles and sits within Wichita County, serving as an important hub for the surrounding agricultural area.
