Lapwai is a small city in Nez Perce County, Idaho, with a 2020 population of 1,169. As the seat of government for the Nez Perce Indian Reservation, it holds deep historical significance for the region. The area has been important to the Nez Perce people for generations. Henry Spalding established a Protestant mission here in 1836, and the settlement was connected to figures like Hin-ma-tute-ke-kaikt, known as Big Thunder and later as James, and Bill Craig, who married James' daughter. The city itself grew from Fort Lapwai, a military installation that operated from 1863 to 1884. The village was officially incorporated in 1911 with the establishment of a model rural school. The name Lapwai derives from the Nez Perce language and means place of the butterflies, referring to the thousands of butterflies that once filled the area during early summer months.
Today, Lapwai sits in a scenic valley carved by Lapwai Creek, roughly three miles south of where the creek meets the Clearwater River. Dramatic hills rise more than 600 feet on either side of the city. U.S. Route 95 passes through Lapwai, connecting it north and west to Lewiston and southeast to Grangeville. The city is part of the Lewiston, Idaho-Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area and is served by the BG&CM Railroad freight carrier, which operates on the former Camas Prairie Railroad line.
