Lake Delton is a village in Sauk County, Wisconsin, located along the Wisconsin River and the Lake Delton reservoir, approximately 40 miles northwest of Madison. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 3,501. The area has developed into a popular resort destination and tourism hub alongside nearby Wisconsin Dells.
The village has a distinctive naming history. It was originally called Norris in 1850, after surveyor Edward Norris, then changed to Delton before becoming Mirror Lake in 1926 to avoid confusion with the Town of Delton. The village ultimately took its current name from the Dell Creek dam, which created the Lake Delton reservoir. Lake Delton was incorporated as a village in 1954.
A significant event shaped the community's modern history when, on June 9, 2008, the approximately 267-acre Lake Delton overflowed its banks following several days of torrential rains. The overflow washed away four homes and damaged a portion of Old Newport Road, while the reservoir nearly emptied into the Wisconsin River.
Today, Lake Delton attracts visitors with notable attractions including the world's largest Trojan Horse at Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park and the world's largest artificial Pink Flamingo. The village was also home to The Wonder Spot from 1952 to 2006. Most of the community is served by the School District of Wisconsin Dells, though a small section falls within the Baraboo School District.
