Kief is a small city in McHenry County, North Dakota, located roughly eight miles southwest of Drake. Founded in 1908 as a station along the Soo Line Railroad, the city was named by Black Sea German settlers after Kiev in the Russian Empire, now known as Kyiv, Ukraine. A post office was established the following year, and the town was incorporated as a village in 1916. Kief achieved its peak population of 307 in 1920, reflecting the growth that came with its role as a railroad hub. In 1967, following state legislation that eliminated all existing incorporation titles for towns and villages across North Dakota, Kief became a city. Today, the community is part of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area and had a population of just eight residents according to the 2020 census. The city encompasses 1.25 square miles and remains home to the Liberty Baptist Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
