Kenly is a town in Johnston and Wilson counties in eastern North Carolina, with a population of 1,491 as of the 2020 census. The community was settled around 1875 along the "Short-Cut" rail line of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad and was incorporated in 1887. It was named for John R. Kenly, a Northern Division Superintendent of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad who later became the railroad's president in 1913. The town's early educational institutions reflected its growth, with Kenly Academy, a private boarding school, established in 1897, followed by the public Kenly High School in 1914. That same year, 1914, the town received its first electric service. U.S. Route 301, known locally as Church Street, serves as the main road through town, with North Carolina Highway 222 crossing it at the center. Interstate 95 runs along the northwest edge of Kenly with access at Exit 107. The area has notable historical significance, including the Boyette Slave House, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The town is also home to the Eastern North Carolina Church of God State Executive Offices and Conference Center and has produced notable figures including Major League Baseball player Al Evans.
