Kendleton, located in western Fort Bend County southwest of Sugar Land, has a unique history rooted in the promise of freedom and opportunity. Established after the Civil War, the community was founded when William E. Kendall divided his plantation property into small farms and sold the plots to formerly enslaved African Americans. This intentional act of land distribution allowed these families to build their own community, which became known as Kendleton.
The arrival of the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway in 1882 marked an important milestone, bringing a rail line between Rosenberg and Victoria through the area. A post office opened two years later in 1884. By 1896, the community had grown to include two general stores and two churches—one Baptist and one Methodist—reflecting a thriving social fabric. The population has fluctuated considerably over the decades, reaching approximately 116 residents in 1900 and fluctuating between 150 and 200 people during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1973, voters approved Kendleton's incorporation as a city, which sparked significant growth, with the population rising to over 600 afterwards. Today, Kendleton is home to 343 residents according to the 2020 census, making it a small but enduring community in Fort Bend County with deep historical roots.
