Kaycee is a small town in Johnson County, Wyoming, with a population of 247 according to the 2020 census. The town was incorporated in 1906 after a post office and general store were established in the area. It takes its name from the "KC" brand used by John Nolan, the town's earliest homesteader, though government officials required the brand letters to be spelled out, resulting in the name Kaycee. The area surrounding Kaycee is rich with Western history. In 1834, Portuguese trappers and traders led by Antonio Montero built a trading post east of town, known as the Portuguese Fort, whose artifacts are now preserved at the Hoofprints of the Past Museum. The Bozeman Trail, blazed in 1863 to connect the Oregon Trail to Montana gold rush territory, ran within four miles of Kaycee and sparked the Indian Wars of the Northern Plains between 1863 and 1868. Two military posts, Fort Reno and Cantonment Reno, were built nearby during the late 1800s to address conflicts in the region. The museum displays items from these historical periods, including artifacts from Fort Reno and a diorama created by local expert Robert Wilson.
