Jacksonville Beach is a coastal resort city in Duval County, Florida, with a population of 23,830 according to the 2020 census. Located on the northern half of San Pablo Island, it is part of a group of communities known as the Jacksonville Beaches, which also includes Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach.
Originally incorporated on May 22, 1907, as Pablo Beach, the city was renamed Jacksonville Beach in 1925. The area's development as a resort began in the late 19th century when investors formed the Jacksonville and Atlantic Railroad to connect oceanfront property to Jacksonville by rail. William Edward Scull, a civil engineer and surveyor, and his wife Eleanor Kennedy Scull were among the first settlers, arriving in the 1880s. The settlement was initially named Ruby after their daughter before being renamed Pablo Beach in 1886 after the San Pablo River.
The city became known for its amusement parks, including The Pavilion, later called Little Coney Island, which opened in 1905 and featured a dance floor, swimming facilities, bowling alleys, and roller skate rinks. Jacksonville Beach also made aviation history when Lt. William DeVoe Coney landed here in 1921 after setting a transcontinental flight record, later surpassed by Jimmy Doolittle in 1922.
In 1968, when Duval County consolidated with the City of Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach voted to retain its own municipal government. Today, residents receive county services from Jacksonville and participate in mayoral elections for the City of Jacksonville while maintaining their independent city status.
