Jackson is a small village in Dakota County, Nebraska, situated within the Sioux City metropolitan area. Today home to 207 residents according to the 2020 census, Jackson has deep historical roots in the region. The area's settlement began even before Jackson itself was established, when a Catholic colony of sixty Irish immigrants led by Father Trecy founded Old St. John's approximately 1.5 miles north of the current site on June 2, 1856. This pioneering community became one of the first towns settled in Dakota County and established the first Catholic parish in Nebraska. However, when the rising Missouri River threatened Old St. John's around 1860, the entire population relocated southward to the present location of Jackson. Originally laid out around 1860 under the name Franklin, the community was renamed in honor of Andrew Jackson when officials discovered another Nebraska post office already carried the Franklin name. Today, Jackson encompasses just 0.45 square miles and maintains its character as a quiet rural village, continuing a tradition of settlement and community that stretches back nearly 170 years to those first Irish settlers who chose to build their lives in this corner of Dakota County.
