Ixonia is a town in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, with a population of 5,120 according to the 2020 census. The town encompasses 36.3 square miles, mostly land with a small amount of water. Within its boundaries lie two unincorporated communities: Ixonia and Pipersville.
The town has a distinctive history shaped by chance. Originally part of the town of Watertown, Ixonia was separated along with Union in 1841. Five years later, Union divided into two towns. While one became Concord, residents of the second town could not agree on a name, so they resolved the disagreement in an unusual way: by drawing letters at random until they formed a word. This creative process resulted in the name Ixonia, chosen on January 21, 1846. Ixonia remains the only town in the United States to bear this name.
The town is served by the Oconomowoc Area School District, which operates Ixonia Elementary School and Oconomowoc High School within the community. Over the years, Ixonia has been home to notable residents including Edwin Coe, a newspaper editor and politician; Jenkin Lloyd Jones, a Unitarian minister and magazine editor; and Peter Morris, a baseball player. These individuals contributed to the broader cultural and civic landscape beyond their small Wisconsin town.
