Swan Point is an unincorporated community located in southern Charles County, Maryland, situated on the banks of the Potomac River. The area is now home to the Swan Point Yacht and Country Club, which was originally planned and initiated in the 1980s as a waterfront community centered around an 18-hole championship golf course. Over time, the development expanded to include a community waterfront pool, marina, clubhouse, walking trails, and tennis courts. The community features custom homes built on wooded lots ranging from one-third to one-half acre, with many offering water views, waterfront access, or golf course frontage. Future expansion plans include additional homesites with cluster homes, townhouses, and single-family residences. In 2009, the 20645 zip code was established to encompass both Swan Point and Issue, Maryland, effectively joining the two names as one community. The origin of Swan Point's name has historically been attributed to Captain John Smith, who explored the region in the early seventeenth century and reportedly observed thousands of swans wintering in the Potomac waters near that point of land. However, current historical research suggests the name more likely derives from Edward Swann, an early settler of Charles County, to whom Lord Baltimore granted twelve hundred acres of land in the area.
