Idabel is the county seat of McCurtain County in Oklahoma's southeast corner, a region known as Choctaw Country. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 6,961. The town was established in 1902 as a station by the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway, which later became part of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway and is now operated by the Kiamichi Railroad. The city's name has an interesting origin, stemming from railroad officials' attempts to honor company leaders. Originally called Purnell after railroad official Isaac Purnell, postal officials rejected the name. A second proposal, Mitchell, was also rejected because another post office with that name already existed. The post office then opened as Bokhoma, a Choctaw word meaning Red River, on December 15, 1902. Railroad officials ultimately chose the name Idabel, combining the names of Isaac Purnell's two daughters, Ida and Bell. When founded, Idabel was in Bok Tuklo County within the Choctaw Nation's Indian Territory. For its first four years, the Choctaw tribe managed local government for its people. In 1906, residents elected their first mayor and adopted a mayor-council form of government. At statehood on November 16, 1907, Idabel was designated the county seat of McCurtain County with 726 residents. The city grew significantly in the following decades and experienced a notable milestone in 2019 when residents elected Craig Young as their first African-American mayor. In November 2022, an EF4 tornado caused substantial damage to the southeast portion of the city.
