Hulbert is a town in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, named after Ben H. Hulbert, a prominent Cherokee man. According to local legend, a white trapper from Kentucky named Benjamin Hulbert married a Cherokee woman and built a store on her allotted land, and a settlement formed around it. The Hulbert Store and Grist Mill was constructed in 1890 between the towns of Wagoner and Tahlequah. As the community grew, it relocated to its present location after the turn of the twentieth century to be closer to the nearest railroad. A post office opened on May 4, 1903, and the town incorporated on January 18, 1965, later becoming a city in 1996. Located in western Cherokee County along Oklahoma State Highway 51, Hulbert sits ten miles east of Tahlequah, the county seat, and fourteen miles west of Wagoner. Fort Gibson Lake lies seven miles to the west on Highway 51. The town covers one square mile and had a population of 483 at the 2020 census, down from 590 in 2010. Hulbert is also home to Our Lady of the Annunciation of Clear Creek Monastery, a Benedictine monastery recently elevated to abbey status. This monastery traces its spiritual lineage to France's Notre Dame de Fontgombault, which itself descends from Saint Pierre de Solesmes in France. Today, Hulbert serves as headquarters for NeoHealth, a community health center that operates multiple clinics throughout the region, and receives electricity from Lake Region Electric Cooperative.
