Howells is a small village located in northern Colfax County in east-central Nebraska. The community was platted in 1886 when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad extended service to that point. It was named after James Smith Howell, a local resident. The village's post office was established that same year, though it was originally spelled without the final S until 1937. Today, Howells covers 0.58 square miles and sits three miles east of the junction of highways 15 and 91.
