Hebron is a small town in Wicomico County, Maryland, with a population of 1,113 according to the 2020 census. The town is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the hometown of professional wrestler Mark Hildreth and politician Scott Taylor.
Hebron's origins trace to 1890, when the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic Railroad extended westward from Salisbury. About six miles from the city, the railroad builders established a shipping point at a location where a store and Colonial dwelling stood amid farms and woodland, naming it for the biblical city of Hebron. Five years later, a lumber manufacturing plant opened, and the hamlet began to grow. The arrival of the railroad, combined with the automobile and improved farm machinery, transformed Hebron into a thriving community. By the 1920s, it had become a hub for both farming and manufacturing, with accessible markets driving rapid growth. In 1927, the town boasted five shirt factories, a flour mill, a canning operation, a lumber mill, and a new high school under construction. The area was known for diverse agricultural production, including peaches, apples, strawberries, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and watermelons, along with significant poultry and dairy operations. Notable citizens like Walter B. Miller and G.A. Bounds contributed substantially to the town's industrial development. Today, Hebron is home to Westside Intermediate School and Spring Hill Landing Strip, and several historic properties remain on the National Register of Historic Places.
