Hardtner is a small city located in Elwood Township in Barber County, Kansas, situated just one mile north of the Kansas and Oklahoma border. Founded in 1887 by Jacob Achenbach, the town was named after Dr. John Hardtner, a local landowner. The first post office opened that same year in July. Like many frontier towns, Hardtner faced the challenge of isolation, and by 1908 residents recognized they needed a railroad connection to survive. Achenbach helped establish a company to build a line eastward to Kiowa, an ambitious project that required crossing Santa Fe railroad tracks. Local legend holds that when the Santa Fe Superintendent objected by positioning his private car at the crossing, word reached him that Hardtner had gathered some forty-five cowboys prepared to take action. The Superintendent moved his car, and the line was completed. In 1929, Hardtner experienced a notable meteorological event when an F2 tornado struck on June 2nd, causing minor damage. Though the twister tracked only 12.2 miles, its unusually slow movement produced some of the highest quality tornado photographs available at that time. Today, Hardtner remains a quiet rural community. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 167 residents spread across a total area of 0.30 square miles. The community experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters.
