Hampton is a small borough located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, situated on the banks of the Musconetcong River. First settled in 1800, the community was originally incorporated as Junction Borough on February 20, 1895, from portions of Lebanon Township and Bethlehem Township. The name was changed to Hampton on February 11, 1909. The borough earned its original name because two major railroads, the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, crossed through the area. In 1880, Hampton consisted of a modest collection of buildings including a store, hotel, cabinet manufacturer, blacksmith, wheelwright shop, grist mill, schoolhouse, and approximately twenty-five dwellings. In 1931, Hampton annexed additional territory from Glen Gardner and Bethlehem Township, acquiring twenty acres from Glen Gardner for four thousand dollars as part of a settlement resolving a long-standing border dispute. Today, Hampton covers 1.52 square miles and is governed under the borough form of municipal government. According to the 2020 census, the borough had a population of 1,438 residents, reflecting modest growth from the 1,401 counted in 2010. Hampton borders Bethlehem Township, Glen Gardner Borough, and Lebanon Township in Hunterdon County, as well as Washington Township in Warren County.
