Hammon is a town straddling Roger Mills County and Custer County in southwestern Oklahoma, situated at the junction of State Highways 33 and 34. The community is named for James H. Hammon, an Indian agent assigned to the Red Moon Agency near the town's future location. His mission involved establishing a reservation school and teaching the Cheyenne and Arapaho to farm as part of a subagency of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Agency. When a post office was established in the Hammon home on June 30, 1894, James's wife, Ida M. Hammon, served as postmaster.
The town's development accelerated with the arrival of the railroad. Originally situated in Custer County, the majority of Hammon was relocated westward into Roger Mills County in 1910 when the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railroad, later known as the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway, laid track in the area. This move positioned the town closer to the new rail line. The board of county commissioners officially accepted Hammon's incorporation on May 22, 1911. Located in southwestern Oklahoma's Great Plains Country region, the town sits just west of the Washita National Wildlife Refuge and just east of the Black Kettle National Grassland. According to the 2020 census, Hammon had a population of 479 residents. The town covers 0.7 square miles and is served by Hammon Public Schools, which is part of the Western Technology Center District.
