Hallandale Beach, located in southern Broward County, Florida, is a city with deep roots in the region's railroad history. Founded by Luther Halland, a Swedish worker recruited by railroad magnate Henry Flagler, the settlement was established south of Dania and promoted for its frost-free climate and affordable land. Halland built the first trading post and served as the community's first postmaster. By 1900, the small farming community had grown to just a dozen families of Swedish, English, and African American descent. The city was officially incorporated on May 14, 1927, as the eighth municipality in Broward County, by which time it had developed into a thriving community of 1,500 residents with electricity and street lights. In 1947, Hallandale was reincorporated as a city, enabling expansion through annexation of adjacent unincorporated land along the Atlantic shore. The city adopted its current name, Hallandale Beach, on August 27, 1999. Today, with a 2023 population of 41,547, the city has evolved significantly from its agricultural origins. It is home to major attractions including Gulfstream Park, a horse racing and casino facility, and Big Easy Casino. The downtown financial district features banks, brokerage houses, and restaurants.
