Haleyville is a city straddling Winston and Marion counties in northwestern Alabama, having incorporated on February 28, 1889. Originally known as Davis Cross Roads, the city was established at the intersection of Byler Road and the Illinois Central Railroad. Today, most of Haleyville lies within Winston County, with only a small portion of its western limits extending into Marion County.
The city has played host to several notable firsts. In 1965, Hal Guthrie opened the first Guthrie's restaurant in Haleyville, a business that would eventually expand beyond its hometown origins. More significantly, on February 16, 1968, Haleyville became home to the nation's first 9-1-1 emergency telephone system, marking an important milestone in emergency response infrastructure. In more recent history, Haleyville citizens voted on June 1, 2010, to become the first city in Winston County since Prohibition to permit alcohol sales.
The city sits in the foothills of the southwestern Appalachian Mountains in a region characterized by hilly terrain and sandy, clay-rich soil sensitive to water runoff. This geography creates numerous creeks and small valleys throughout the area. Haleyville's position on the Tennessee Valley Divide means the city drains into three different river systems: the Tennessee River to the north, the Tombigbee River to the southwest, and the Black Warrior River to the southeast.
