Hale Center is a city located in Hale County, Texas, situated on the high plains of the Llano Estacado at the intersection of Interstate 27 and Farm to Market Road 1914. The community lies approximately eleven miles southwest of Plainview, the county seat, and about thirty-three miles north of Lubbock. The city encompasses 1.1 square miles and experiences a semiarid climate.
The town was founded in 1893 through the merger of two rival communities, Hale City and Epworth, both established in 1891. Residents physically moved buildings to the new site, which was named Hale Center because of its location at the center of the county. This significant consolidation marked the beginning of the community's formal establishment.
A major tragedy struck Hale Center on June 2, 1965, when a tornado devastated the downtown area. The storm destroyed numerous businesses, city hall, and the fire station, resulting in five deaths and sixty injuries, with property damage totaling eight million dollars. The community has since rebuilt and continued to serve the surrounding region.
According to the 2020 census, Hale Center had a population of 2,062 residents, representing a decline from the 2,252 recorded in 2010. The city is served by the Hale Center Independent School District and is home to the Hale Center Owls.
