Hackettstown is a town located in Warren County in northwestern New Jersey, situated along the Musconetcong River in a valley setting. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 10,248, reflecting steady growth over recent decades. The town was incorporated on March 9, 1853, from portions of Independence Township, and was named after Samuel Hackett, an early settler and landowner who generously contributed refreshments at a hotel christening to secure the town's name, which had previously been known as Helms' Mills or Musconetcong.
William Johnson and his brother George were instrumental in the town's early development. Beginning in 1839, they operated a successful dry goods store and remained active in community affairs, contributing to the establishment of Union Cemetery and supporting local institutions. The Johnson brothers helped shape Hackettstown's civic identity during its formative years.
