Golden Pond was a town in western Trigg County, Kentucky, situated on a peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in what is now the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The community was established in the 19th century, with a post office first recorded on December 28, 1848, though the recognized town itself was founded in 1882. The name likely originated when residents noticed sunshine reflecting off a nearby pond, making its surface appear like melted gold, though local legend offered alternative explanations for the distinctive name.
Early Golden Pond's economy relied on the area's natural resources, particularly timber, iron ore, and agricultural land. The town proved resilient through hardship, rebuilding after a devastating fire in 1898 and again following another major fire in 1936. During Prohibition, Golden Pond gained national attention for its moonshine whiskey production, with the illicit spirits distributed to speakeasies in major Midwestern cities including Chicago, Detroit, and St. Louis.
The arrival of the Tennessee Valley Authority transformed Golden Pond's future. In 1964, the TVA established its first office for the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area at Golden Pond. As the federal government acquired all lands within the recreation area, many residents were displaced. Golden Pond's last inhabitants left in 1969, marking the end of nearly two centuries of settlement. Some displaced families relocated to eastern Calloway County, where they established a community called Little Golden Pond in 1989.
