Fulton is a home rule-class city located in the southeast corner of Fulton County, Kentucky, situated just north of the Tennessee state line. With a population of 2,357 according to the 2020 census, the city has experienced modest decline from 2,445 residents a decade earlier. Originally established as a post office called Pontotoc in 1847, the community was renamed Fulton in 1861 and formally incorporated by the state assembly in 1872.
The city's most distinctive claim to fame came from its role in the banana trade. United Fruit Company, now known as Chiquita, shipped bananas from South America to New Orleans by steamship, then loaded them onto railcars packed with ice for the northbound journey to Chicago. Fulton possessed the only ice house on this route, making it essential to the banana distribution network. At the Fulton Ice Plant, massive 162-pound blocks of ice were used to re-ice the shipments, allowing more than seventy percent of all bananas consumed in the United States to pass through the city. This prominence earned Fulton the title of Banana Capital of the World. The city celebrated this legacy through the International Banana Festival, held annually from 1962 through 1992, and revived in the early twenty-first century. The festival became famous for featuring the world's largest banana pudding, which once weighed 2,000 pounds.
Today, Fulton remains connected to national transportation networks through Amtrak service, making it one of only four Kentucky cities with passenger rail service.
