Florida City is a city in Miami-Dade County and the southernmost municipality in the South Florida metropolitan area. Originally promoted as a land venture named "Detroit," the city was founded when the first thirty families arrived in 1910 to an area with no existing buildings. These early settlers had to stay in nearby Homestead while their homes were constructed. The town incorporated in 1914 under its current name, Florida City. According to the 2020 census, the city had grown to a population of 13,085, up from 11,245 a decade earlier. Like its neighboring city Homestead, Florida City experienced catastrophic damage from Hurricane Andrew in August 1992. Today, the city functions primarily as a Miami suburb and a major agricultural area, with much of its modern landscape devoted to hotels and tourist facilities. Florida City holds the distinction of being the southernmost city in the United States that is not located on an island, and it serves as the last stop on the mainland before the Florida Keys. The city is positioned at the eastern end of the only road running through Everglades National Park, which terminates at Flamingo. The southern terminus of the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike, where it meets U.S. 1, is located in Florida City. The city continues to serve as a gateway to both the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park.
