Firebaugh is a city in Fresno County, California, located on the west side of the San Joaquin River, approximately 38 miles west of Fresno. The city sits at an elevation of 151 feet and had a population of 8,096 at the 2020 census, representing growth from 7,549 in 2010. State Route 33 and the San Joaquin Valley Railroad pass through downtown, where a distinctive water tank painted with the city's name marks the small commercial district.
The city's history traces back to Andrew D. Firebaugh, a Virginia-born entrepreneur who arrived during the Gold Rush. His most notable enterprise was a ferry boat that transported people across the San Joaquin River, giving the city its original name, Firebaugh's Ferry. In 1857, Firebaugh built a toll road for wagons that ran from what became Bell Station over Pacheco Pass to Rancho San Luis Gonzaga. The town served as a station on the Butterfield Overland Stage, with a post office operating from 1860 to 1862 before reopening in 1865. During the 1880s, the area was part of the Miller and Lux Company's vast cattle operation. Firebaugh was formally incorporated as a city in 1914.
