Exeter, a city in Barry County, Missouri, was platted in 1880 and named after Exeter in Devon, England. Situated in Exeter Township, the city covers 0.79 square miles and is located at the highest point in the county, a geography that proved significant to its early development. The Frisco rail line brought tourists through the Ozarks to resorts like Mineral Springs, and in 1896, the shortest railway in the country was built to connect Exeter with Cassville, spanning just 4.8 miles one-way. This railroad, called The Cassville and Western Railroad, relied on steam power to travel uphill to Exeter and gravity to coast back downhill, serving as the main route into Cassville during winters when roads became impassable. During its economic peak, Exeter supported The Palace hotel and a flour mill. The city experienced a major setback when a massive fire destroyed its downtown on October 21st, 1927. The railroad went bankrupt in 1956. By the 1950s, Exeter maintained a Farmer Exchange, market, and post office, which has operated continuously since 1880. The city has produced notable athletes, including Major League Baseball player Ed Hawk and professional bull rider Mason Lowe. Its high school sports teams have achieved considerable success, including a boys basketball state championship in 1963 and girls basketball state championships in 2009, with a second-place finish in 2011. As of the 2020 census, Exeter had a population of 733.
