East Otto is a town located on the northern border of Cattaraugus County in New York, positioned along Cattaraugus Creek, which marks the boundary with Erie County. Named after Jacob Otto, an agent of the Holland Land Company, the town shares its namesake with the neighboring town of Otto. With a population of 977 at the 2020 census, East Otto covers a total area of 40.4 square miles, making it a rural community in the region.
The town was founded in 1854 as one of the last towns to be established in Cattaraugus County. It was created from the eastern portion of the town of Otto, which had previously encompassed much of the north-central area of the county. A notable landmark is the East Otto Union School, constructed in 1920 and now serving as the town hall. This historic building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting the community's heritage.
The hamlet of East Otto serves as the commercial center, situated at the junction of Cattaraugus County Routes 12, 14, and 75. Route 12 heads westward toward Otto and northward to U.S. Route 219 in Ashford, while Route 14 travels southward toward Little Valley.
