The post office at Dwarf has roots in an earlier settlement called Tunell Hill, established in 1878 by Joseph Hall. That name came from a tunnel that brothers Sam and Felix Combs had cut to create an aqueduct for their mill. When Tunell Hill closed in 1881, it was reestablished two years later as Dwarf. The new name reflected a local connection to another Combs brother, Jeremiah, who earned the nickname "Short Jerry" because of his small stature. Located a short distance up Combs Branch from Troublesome Creek itself, the Dwarf post office has endured to the present day, making it one of Perry County's longest-lasting settlements along the creek. The area's economy in the early twentieth century relied significantly on coal mining, with numerous operations scattered throughout the region's branches and hollows.
