Drumright sprang to life in 1912 when wildcatter Thomas Baker Slick struck oil on a local farm, sparking a rush of workers, speculators, and merchants into the area. The town grew so rapidly that oil workers initially lived in tents and boxcar shacks, earning the community the local nickname "Ragtown." Named after farmer and businessman Aaron Drumright, whose land became part of the townsite, the city incorporated in May 1913 and was designated a first-class city by 1916. By 1920, Drumright had grown to over 6,400 residents and became part of the productive Cushing-Drumright Oil Field.
The young city quickly developed the amenities of a booming oil town, including hotels, boarding houses, gambling dens, and dance halls. The arrival of railroad lines in 1915 and 1916 further boosted growth. Drumright even hosted minor league baseball, with the Drumright Oilers playing in the Western Association and Oklahoma State League from 1920 to 1923. In the fall of 1922, baseball legend Babe Ruth played an exhibition game there during a barnstorming tour.
As oil production declined beginning in the 1930s, so did the town's fortunes. A major refinery closed in the 1950s, and the population has continued to shrink over the decades. Today, Drumright is home to the Monthly Market, held on the first Saturday of each month, drawing hundreds of visitors seeking regional crafts and food. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 2,560.
