Dodson is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Collingsworth County, Texas, just 1.25 miles west of the Oklahoma border. The town was founded on July 1, 1910, by Frank Kell of Wichita Falls as a stop on the Wellington Branch of the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway. The establishment of Dodson came about when Elmore Dodson, a local pioneer and rancher, donated 200 acres to ensure the railroad would pass through southeastern Collingsworth County rather than through the nearby community of Arlie. In recognition of his contribution, the town was named in his honor, and a celebration with a picnic attended by a trainload of visitors from Oklahoma marked its formal opening on August 29, 1910.
In its early years, Dodson developed quickly, with the first residence and cotton gin built by N. L. Jones, a store and post office operated by William T. McDowell, and a hotel established by R. H. Miller. The town soon added a bank, telephone exchange, and two churches. A permanent schoolhouse was completed in fall 1912. By 1930, Dodson had grown to 426 residents and supported 25 businesses. The city was incorporated in the 1920s and the official name was changed from Dodsonville to Dodson on July 1, 1937. However, the population declined over subsequent decades due to decreased agricultural activity and shifts toward cattle raising, falling to 93 residents by the 2020 census. Today, Dodson continues to serve as an agricultural center for the tri-county region, with cotton, wheat, sorghum, and peanuts as primary crops.
