Dix is a small village in Kimball County in the Nebraska Panhandle. Originally established as a railroad siding on the Union Pacific Railroad, Dix was founded as a settlement in 1886. The community takes its name from Dixon, Illinois, the former home of an early settler, though the name was shortened to avoid confusion with other places named Dixon. Today, State Highway 30 runs through the village, and a section of that highway within city limits was renamed Miller Street in 1995 to honor Fred H. Miller, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for thirty years and operated the town's train depot. Fred also served on the town board and lived near the city park with his wife Ada B. Miller. Their memorial stone can be found in the graveyard south of town near Interstate 80. The train depot itself was dismantled following Fred's retirement. According to the 2020 census, Dix has a population of 187 residents. The village covers a total area of 0.22 square miles and continues to serve as a small but enduring community in the region.
