The town was founded in 1909 by workers for the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway and was named after William Peter Dewar, a railroad official. The town sits within the Henryetta Coal Formation, and by 1943, four coal companies operated there: the Berkey Coal Company, Coal Creek Coal Company, Dewar Coal Company, and Martin-Geary Coal Company. Together, these operations produced over 13,600 tons of coal annually. The shortline Coalton Railway, later renamed the Okmulgee Northern Railway, played a vital role in transporting this coal from Dewar and neighboring mining areas along the Deep Fork River. Operating from 1916 to 1964, this railway connected the producing regions of Dewar, Coalton, and Schulter, helping move the region's valuable mineral resources to market.
