Devol is a small town in Cotton County, Oklahoma, with deep roots in the region's railroad and oil heritage. The community was founded in 1907 when the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway laid tracks through the area, and a post office opened that same year. The town takes its name from J. Fiske Devol, who owned the land where it was established. By 1911, when the railroad became a subsidiary of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, Devol had grown to approximately 400 residents.
The discovery of the nearby Burkburnett Oil Field in 1918 brought dramatic growth to the town. At its peak in 1920, Devol's population reached 1,936, supported by two refineries, oil pipelines, and a variety of businesses including churches, stores, a hotel, dance halls, and hundreds of rental structures. The town even boasted the area's first dynamo used for electrical power. However, this boom proved short-lived. When the oil business declined in 1922, most workers departed, and the town bank failed in 1927, leaving only 328 residents by 1930.
Devol's decline continued through the following decades. A 1959 tornado damaged much of the business district and the old high school building. The high school had already closed in 1953, with students consolidated into the Big Pasture School District in Randlett. By 2020, the town's population had dropped to 93, representing a 38 percent decrease from the 150 residents counted in 2000. Today, Devol remains a quiet rural community with limited commercial activity and reduced postal services.
