Des Moines is a small village in Union County, New Mexico with a population of 117 as of the 2020 census. The village was established in the late 1880s when the Colorado and Southern Railroad built a line through the area and named the station after Des Moines, Iowa. A post office opened in 1906, and the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain & Pacific Railway arrived in 1907. That same year, two settlement sites were surveyed: one retained the name Des Moines, while the other was called Saavedra after its founder. Though Saavedra was initially more populated, the combined settlement became known as Des Moines. The early village consisted mostly of hastily constructed shacks and reached its peak population of 800 in 1920, but drought and the Great Depression triggered a sharp decline in residents that has continued to the present day. Today, Des Moines remains a small village surrounded by large cattle ranches in a region marked by inactive volcanoes. Notable geographic features include Sierra Grande, the largest shield volcano in the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field at 8,723 feet elevation, located about three miles southwest of the village, and Twin Mountain, a volcanic formation standing 6,581 feet high approximately four miles north of town that has historically provided construction material for the area.
