Deer Lodge is the county seat of Powell County, Montana, with a population of 2,938 according to the 2020 census. The city has deep roots in Montana's frontier heritage and continues to serve as a regional hub for the western part of the state.
Today, Deer Lodge is perhaps best known as the home of the Montana State Prison, which operates as a major local employer on a campus 3.5 miles west of town. The city's historical significance extends back to its role as an important railroad division headquarters for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad before the line's local abandonment in 1980. Visitors can explore this railroad legacy at the Old Prison Museum, located at the south end of Main Street on the former prison site, which features a historic cellblock building, theater, antique and automobile museums, and a Milwaukee Road electric locomotive.
The city's name comes from a natural geological formation called Warm Springs Mound, which contained saline deposits that created a natural salt lick for deer. The protected valley became a wintering ground for local wildlife. Deer Lodge is also home to the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, dedicated to interpreting the frontier cattle ranching era. This historic property was originally built in 1862 by Johnny Grant, a Scottish, French, and Metis fur trader whose settlement efforts attracted others to the valley. Later, Conrad Kohrs, one of Montana's famous Cattle Kings, made his home here, eventually controlling over a million acres across Montana, Wyoming, and Alberta. Additionally, Deer Lodge was the site of the College of Montana, the state's first institution of higher learning.
